In His Hand
The whole round world, and all its inhabitants – and much more – lie in the hand of God.
In Psalm 136, the statement “God’s mercy endures forever” is repeated 26 times. Mercy forever - MERCY forever, mercy FOREVER – pause, and think on that! The psalmist looked back over all mankind’s history, from Creation through all the time his mind could review, including all his personally stormy and troubled days, and he wrote those words. He repeated and repeated them, because throughout all that long span of days his heart perceived a thread – the thread of God’s mercy and God’s love.
Brighter even than the sun and moon is this light, like a silver gleam even above the murky darkness of strife and chaos – the love of God. Oh, if only we had eyes to see it always! Deeper than the weight of all my sin, this pit into which I have dug myself, the hand of my God upholds me. The love of God is deeper still. Underneath me are His everlasting arms – and His mercy that endures forever.
It endures forever! Can I then suppose that it could ever fail me? I can NOT fall out of the arms of God’s mercy. I can choose to worry and fret like a restless baby; but, if I were to just still myself, surely I would see above me, like a mother’s sweet face, His faithful love embracing me, His beloved child.
Oh, may I trust in that mercy – that has neither a beginning nor an end! God, whose very nature is love, has always loved, He loves now, and He always will love. That great, endless love is reaching out to me, and to you, this very moment. I pray that you come to believe and know that you are in His hand, cradled in His matchless mercy.
