John Henry Jowett << Go back
One of my most treasured books is a daily devotional book by
Dr. John Henry Jowett. My Daily Meditation is a book from a great heart.
John Henry Jowett (1863 – 1923) was a God-possessed preacher. He was devoted to the Savior, and had a passion for proclaiming the Good News; those who heard him preach were forever impressed with the majesty of the Gospel. The dynamic of the Cross was behind all that he said, and “reconciliation in Christ” was his keynote. He was ranked the most appealing preacher in England by a 1907 survey.
As a young man he aspired to enter the legal field, but at age seventeen he experienced a definite call from God and “surrendered to the divine initiative”. Dr. Jowett ministered on both sides of the Atlantic, beginning in Newcastle and Birmingham, England, and later accepting an invitation to take the pastorate of The Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, where he remained for eight years until the outbreak of World War I. At that time he returned to England as pastor of Westminster Chapel in London.
John Henry Jowett was an artist with words. He painted mental images that were so clear and concise that people could easily identify with them. He was an unpretentious, humble man, and much of his writing has the feel of a fireside conversation. On behalf of Jesus, the lover of men’s souls, John Henry Jowett was a tender wooer. With beckoning sensitivity, he conveys a richness of genuine affection, empathy, and the great compassion of the One he so loved.
I am convinced that the gems Dr. Jowett shared in this book are a result of his own relentless personal quest for ever deeper communion with Jesus Christ. My Daily Meditation has been a constant source of encouragement to me to run in that same direction. I pray that when you “meet” John Henry Jowett, you, too, will hear God speak to your heart and that you will be strengthened in your love and commitment to Him.
