Strong's Concordance... << Go back
Some people say that they don’t read the Bible because it’s too hard to understand. You may have felt that way, too. I’d like to introduce you to a valuable tool that can help you, as it has me: Strong’s Concordance. If you sincerely desire to be a student of God’s Word, I suggest that you acquire this time-honored resource. It has been a basic tool for researching words and topics for over a century. So many times it has helped me understand the meaning of words and given me insight into what a passage means.
Dr. James Strong (1822-1894) published the concordance in 1890. He had painstakingly and faithfully constructed this book for the blessed benefit of countless people, with the help of over one hundred colleagues. Strong’s Concordance provides an exhaustive cross-reference of every word in the King James Version of the Bible back to every place that particular word appears in the original text. This allows students to not only find in the Bible where a certain word appears, but also to compare how the same word may be used elsewhere in the Bible.
The concordance lists each word that appears in the Bible in alphabetical order. Each verse in which the word appears is listed in order of its appearance in the Bible. The word appears in italics along with a small portion of the surrounding text. To the right of each scripture reference is the “Strong’s number”. This number allows the user of the concordance to look up the meaning of the word in the original language, Hebrew or Greek, in the associated dictionary in the back – helping one better understand the meaning and also study related words.
Also in the back of the concordance, in some versions, there are many helpful guides for the student’s further investigation, such as: prayers of the Bible, highlighted subjects, a table of weights and measures, comparison of the four Gospels, the parables of Christ, His teachings and illustrations, the miracles He performed, prophecies of the Messiah fulfilled by Christ, etc. If you are serious about studying the Bible, Strong’s concordance is an essential resource. Add it to your library, and investigate the rich, everlasting treasures in God’s Word for yourself!
